A wooden figurine, a South American fetish, is stolen from a museum, but is soon returned along with a note from the thief with the message that the theft was only part of a bet. But Tintin soon discovers that the returned figurine is a copy because the original had a broken ear. Tintin's attempt to track down thieves Ramon Bada and Alonzo Perez leads him to San Theodoros in South America where he ends up in the middle of a war. He heads into the rainforest and meets Indians before finally solving the mystery.
